Posted on Mon, May. 10, 2010 Modern moms have a classic day in Miami Beach BY DIANA MOSKOVITZ dmoskovitz@MiamiHerald.com On the soft sands of Miami Beach, just a few feet away, pulsating music, heat and hormones raged.  But here, beneath the shade of sea grapes and palm trees, ladies -- grandmothers, mothers and daughters -- daintily lunched. Finger foods awaited them on white china, classical music floated through the air and the mothers in the crowd got extra attention. It was the Mother's Day Concert and High Tea, styled after the gatherings of centuries ago, for several dozen modern mothers Sunday at the outdoor garden of the Soleá restaurant at the W Hotel in Miami Beach. The event was staged in partnership between the restaurant and the Center for Emerging Art, a local nonprofit organization. Most of the music flowed from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's The Magic Flute, performed by the Center For Emerging Art Chamber Ensemble and with narration read aloud by the center's Ava Rado. It also included a performance of Eine kleine Nachtmusik by Mozart himself -- or at least the virtuoso as portrayed by 6-year-old Misha Klopukh. Misha dressed the part in 18th Century garb and a curly white wig. Only his modern sandals betrayed him. In the crowd, of course, were his parents. ``The first thing I did was tell her happy Mother's Day and I love her,'' Misha said before his performance on an electronic keyboard, his younger sister Isabella by his side. A few feet away sat Francine Shoemaker, 29. Her 1-year-old son, Cole, less inclined to sitting, instead scampered on a patch of grass nearby. While he is a bit young for formal Mother's Day presents, Cole did have one gift for his mom. ``Yes, he's being very good,'' Shoemaker said with a proud smile, moments before Cole scurried to investigate a plate of sandwiches upon a table. The same table would, minutes later, be speckled with crayons, probably for use on the back pages of the event program that included several black and white images of performers for coloring. ONE OF SEVERAL The event was one of several programs the Center for Emerging Arts does during the year, Rado said. The price was $45 for adults and $25 for children, with half going to the restaurant and half to the arts center for its community programs, Rado said. As the music neared its end, Cecilia Villegas, 28, lounged on one chair and her mother, Marivel Vazquez, 50, on another. ``It was a surprise to her,'' Villegas said. ``She didn't know until we got here.'' The gift also was a surprise to Vazquez's other daughter in Panama, she said, who sent her mom text messages asking, ``What is the surprise?'' PERFECT WEATHER Vazquez certainly was surprised, and said she loved it. The weather was kind. The shade and ocean breeze kept everyone cool. For her mom, Villegas said, the surprise was the least she could do. ``She takes care of us,'' Villegas said, ``every day of the year.'' The audience enjoyed the enchanted garden and was taken on a wonderful, magical ride through the music of Mozart's Magic Flute. Afternoon High Tea was prepared by Executive Chef Michael Gilligan at W South Beach, who put together a wonderful menu, fashioned after the British Afternoon Tea, which includes tea sandwiches, Devonshire clotted cream, wonderful Cheddar Cheese Scones, and Fairy cakes and cookies for children of all ages.
